This one solved the problem:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=32993802

Something which helped me was removing the automatic detection of proxys in windows.

Enter control panel, internet options, connections, LAN settings and uncheck "Automatic detect settings" or something similar.

Well, this is embarrassing.
Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.

This happens each time on logging in, when firefox restores the previous session. Upon clicking the restore button it just resumes as it should.
